Nantucket artist, Diana Northrop, started coming to Nantucket Island in 1956 for summers with her family. All her creative interests, such as, music, poetry, needlepoint and her passions for silk, pastel and acrylic painting have sprung from her love of the Island. She holds a degree in Art History from Dickinson College and continues to study with various artists in ongoing workshops.
Upon retirement from her California career in fundraising as a Development Director in the music, theatre and education fields, she redefined herself as a full-time artist.
Diana has studied pastel painting with nationally renown master pastelists on both coasts. She learned unique methods for capturing the color and movement of ocean waves, and special techniques for underpainting which deepen and enrich the finished look of her works. She uses a combination of soft and hard pastels as well as pastel pencils on premium sanded paper.
Diana also studied silk painting at the Studio Channel Islands Center in Camarillo, CA learning the French Serti method of outlining designs in various metallic resist colors, then using textile paints or dyes to create a stained glass-like effect. Her abstract designs display different marbled effects using a variety of sea salt grains on wet paint and dyes. Recently she developed a new method of impression dying using actual Nantucket scallop shells, sea stars and beach stones which are dyed right on to the silk.
Nantucket Artist, Diana Northrop’s favorite subjects are seascapes, flowers, birds, marine life, Nantucket Quarterboards and House signs and other Nantucket Island icons. Her work includes pastel and acrylic paintings, silk paintings, and hand-painted wearable art scarves which can also double as wall hangings or shawls. Custom orders are welcomed and studio tours available.
